Description
Fucus vesiculosus | ‘Bladder Wrack’ | 100g dried seaweed
Fucus vesiculosus is a large, fronded and bladder-forming seaweed of the Fucaceae family, which is native to coastal regions of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the western Baltic and North Seas. Although most commonly known as ‘Bladder Wrack’, vesiculosus is also referred to as ‘Black Tang’, ‘Black Tany’, ‘Bladder Fucus’, ‘Cut Weed’, ‘Dyers Fucus’, ‘Red Fucus’, ‘Rock Wrack’, ‘Rockweed’ and ‘Sea Oak’.
The original source of iodine (which was discovered in 1811), this common species has historically been used medically and is today often sold as a nutritional supplement. The reason that we’ve added it to our product range, however, is simply that it makes an excellent organic fertiliser with a low impact on the environment (as do many other seaweed species, such as Ascophyllum nodosum).
In its natural marine environment, ‘Bladder Wrack’ acts as a shelter for creatures including isopods, snails and tube worms. Interestingly, it also defends itself from herbivorous predators by producing various chemical deterrents!
