Mimosa hostilis (syn. Mimosa tenuiflora) | ‘Carbonal’, ‘Jurema’, ‘MHRB’, ‘Tepezcohuite’ | Root bark (Brazilian ‘B’)
This is a much lighter, brownish-coloured type of Mimosa hostilis (syn. Mimosa tenuiflora) bark than the other type we offer via an alternative source, originating from a sustainable plantation in northern Brazil (hostilis grown there is usually considered to be of a much higher quality than that grown in Mexico). This Mimosa hostilis root bark (‘MHRB’) is great as a colourful organic dye for fabrics and is also a popular ingredient in soap-making too.
Recently officially renamed Mimosa tenuiflora, Mimosa hostilis is a perennial shrub or tree called by several common names, including ‘Black Jurema’, ‘Cabrera’, ‘Calumbi’, ‘Carbonal’, ‘Jurema’, ‘Jurema Preta’, ‘MHRB’, ‘Tepezcohuite’ and ‘Vinho de Jurema’. Most often growing at lower altitudes (although as high as 3,300 feet has been recorded), the species is native to Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Panama and Venezuela.
Mimosa hostilis bark is used medicinally in Mexico and South America to treat bronchitis, burns and wounds, coughs and toothache. It’s also a useful ‘drought-fodder’ and parasite-preventative for livestock. Moreover, hostilis is used to fertilise and fix soil, for fuel, to make charcoal and to build bridges, buildings, fences, furniture and other practical items. Further, the bark’s high tannin content makes it especially useful for both dyeing and leather production, while its high levels of saponins and lipids help to create the nicest handmade soaps!
