Astrophytum Lucky Dip (Mixed Species) | 25 seeds
Here’s your opportunity to grow several nice species of Astrophytum cacti without being forced to buy more seed than you need to, with our Astrophytum Lucky Dip! Astrophytum derives from the Greek words for “star” and “plant”, hence collectively they’re commonly known as ‘Star Cacti’. To a lesser extent, they’re also called ‘Living Rocks’, although share this informal name with several other genera – notably the Aizoaceae (‘Lithops’).
Native to Mexico and parts of the USA, the genus Astrophytum comprises of six attractively distinctive species; Astrophytum asterias (‘Sand Dollar Cactus’, ‘Sea Urchin Cactus’, ‘Star Peyote’), Astrophytum capricorne (‘Goat’s Horn Cactus’), Astrophytum caput-medusae, Astrophytum coahuilense, Astrophytum myriostigma (‘Bishop’s Cap’, ‘Bishop’s Hat’, ‘Bishop’s Mitre’) and Astrophytum ornatum (‘Monk’s Hood’).
A common component of many public and private gardens around the world, Astrophytum cacti are really easy to cultivate from seed, preferring habitats within USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11. Space the young plants roughly thirty centimetres apart to allow them ample room to reach maturity. Use well-drained, mildly acidic to mildly alkaline soil and place in light shade (they can handle full sun, but a little shade is preferable). Apply a small amount of low-nitrogen fertiliser through the spring and summer for improved growth rates, but be careful not to overdo it – else your beautiful new cacti might well burst!
