Trichocereus bridgesii ‘Bertha’ x Trichocereus macrogonus | 25 seeds
Another cool American cactus crossbreed, Trichocereus bridgesii ‘Bertha’ x Trichocereus macrogonus is also another of our UK exclusives… This seed comes from this year’s harvest and should produce some top quality plants!
The father of this hybrid, ‘Bertha’, is a nice example of Trichocereus bridgesii (syn. Echinopsis lageniformis – commonly known as ‘Bolivian Torch’), a fast-growing columnar type which reaches a maximum height of roughly six metres, branching out at the base to form stems of up to around twenty centimetres thick. Mature bridgesii can grow up to thirty centimetres a year in ideal conditions!
Closely-related to Trichocereus pachanoi (‘San Pedro’) and Trichocereus peruvianus (‘Peruvian Torch’), bridgesii really is a beautiful plant – highly recognisable by its fierce spines that can reach up to ten centimetres in length! As with some other Trichocereus species, it has been used by Bolivian shaman in healing rituals and is regarded by them as possessing sacred and protective properties.
The mother plant, Trichocereus macrogonus (syn. Echinopsis macrogona) is another fast-growing columnar Trichocereus cactus from Bolivia, which is not only closely related to Trichocereus bridgesii and Trichocereus pachanoi, but is particularly entwined with Trichocereus peruvianus (both macrogonus and peruvianus are currently ‘contending’ names, which many people consider to be synonymous).
A lovely blue-green in colour, macrogonus grows to around three metres high once mature. Its stems, growing up to approximately ten centimetres in diameter, are studded with brown to yellow brown spines up to five centimetres long. A self-sterile species, macrogonus blooms only at night, forming white flowers which can reach roughly eighteen centimetres across.
These two Trichocereus species are regarded as useful universal grafting stocks, offering a high success rate and a long-lifetime of speedy and consistent growth. These hybrid seeds are very easy to germinate and grow and their main requirements consist of high humidity levels, a free-draining soil mix and enough water, light and nutrients. This Trichocereus bridgesii x Trichocereus macrogonus hybrid seed can be easily grown indoors in the UK and Europe, so what are you waiting for?!
