Both parent strains for this nice crossbreed are clones of Trichocereus bridgesii (syn. Echinopsis lageniformis – commonly known as ‘Bolivian Torch’), a fast-growing columnar cactus which reaches a mature height of approximately six metres. Branching out from the base to produce stems of up to twenty centimetres thick, established bridgesii often grow up to thirty centimetres a year in ideal conditions!
A close relative of species such as Trichocereus pachanoi (‘San Pedro’) and Trichocereus peruvianus (‘Peruvian Torch’), bridgesii really is a beautiful plant – highly recognisable by its fierce spines that can reach up to ten centimetres in length! As with some other Trichocereus species, it has been used by Bolivian shaman in healing rituals and is regarded by them as possessing sacred and protective properties. The species is also grown as an ornamental and as a universal grafting stock, offering a high success rate and a long-lifetime of speedy and consistent growth.
These seeds are easy to germinate and grow and can be easily grown indoors or outdoors. Their main requirements are fairly high humidity levels, a free-draining soil mix and enough water, light and nutrients.
