Trichocereus ‘Helon’ is a nice strong pachanoid-type cactus hailing from the Australian growing community and is most likely to be mainly pachanoi in its parentage. We’re looking forward to growing these so we can gain some practical experience with this more obscure clone!

‘Big Plym’ is an impressive cloned variety of the famous ‘San Pedro’ cactus (properly Trichocereus pachanoi, syn. Echinopsis pachanoi), a fast-growing columnar cactus widespread in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador and Peru. Native to the Ecuadorian and Peruvian Andes, pachanoi prefers an altitude range of 6,600 to 9,800 feet. The species has been used for by humans for more than three thousand years as an ornamental, for divination and in folk medicine. Besides this traditional use, pachanoi is considered a universal grafting stocks, offering a high incidence of success and an extended lifespan of fast, consistent growth.

‘San Pedro’ is a short-spined, light to dark green-coloured cactus which grows up to twenty feet tall (although the highest recorded was forty feet!) under ideal conditions in USDA Zones 8, 9, 10 and 11. Its stems usually form multiple branches from the plant’s base, grow up to fifteen centimetres in diameter and have six to eight ribs. Pachanoi‘s Andean origins enable it to withstand far lower temperatures than can many other cacti and it’s consequently easy to grow indoors and outdoors in most areas.

These hybrid seeds are very easy to germinate and grow and their main requirements consist of high humidity levels, a free-draining soil mix and enough water, light and nutrients. They can easily be grown indoors in the UK and Europe and can reach up to thirty centimetres annual growth once mature.

Closely-related to Trichocereus bridgesii (‘Bolivian Torch’) and Trichocereus peruvianus (‘Peruvian Torch’), pachanoi is a truly wonderful species which deserves a place in any cactusphile’s collection!
