Trichocereus huanucoensis Trichocereus pachanoi ‘Bach’ | 25 seeds

Arkham’s Botanical is pleased to offer our latest UK exclusive – an absolutely incredible Canadian hybrid of Trichocereus huanucoensis x Trichocereus pachanoi ‘Bach’! Rarely available, there is currently very little information available regarding this wonderful cross…

Apparently native to Huánuco, Peru, huanucoensis is a rapidly growing, wide-ribbed and thick-stemmed branching columnar species, reaching up to seven metres high and with stems of approximately twenty centimetres in diameter. Blue-green in colour and highly variable in appearance (dependent on habitat), plants of this type may have either long, golden spines or (commonly) none at all and produce beautiful white nocturnal blooms.

A fairly obscure and rarely marketed cactus that’s nevertheless much admired by the hardcore Trichocereus fanatic, huanucoensis is not actually considered to be a ‘true’ species as of writing. Rather, the plants known by that name are generally believed to fall somewhere on the pachanoiperuvianus spectrum, displaying characteristics similar to other plants within this complex. Some authorities have also conjectured a relationship with or intermediate form of Trichocereus santaensis, due to similarities in flower morphology. Notably, the Trichocereus huanucoensis found cultivated outside its natural habitat in Peru is suspected by many to originate from material imported into the USA in the 1950s by nursery owner Harry Johnson senior.

Whether huanucoensis is ever “definitely” identified, it’s a great addition to any discerning collection, combining many of the best traits of the closely-related Trichocereus pachanoi (‘San Pedro’) and Trichocereus peruvianus (‘Peruvian Torch’). As with those species, huanucoensis should handle anything from USDA Zones 8-10, where it may average roughly thirty centimetres of new growth per year in ideal conditions. Make sure to provide fertile, free-draining soil and regular watering and watch this fatty get even fatter!

Trichocereus pachanoi (syn. Echinopsis pachanoi) is another fast-growing columnar species, native to Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador and Peru. Light to dark green in colour, pachanoi averages around six metres tall in USDA Hardiness Zones 8-10, but has been known to reach twice that! Its stems branch from the base and grow up to fifteen centimetres in diameter.

Used historically by indigenous healers, as well as as universal grafting stock, hedge plant and fencing. The seeds are very easy to germinate and grow indoors or out. The main requirements are relatively high humidity levels, free-draining soil, water, light and nutrients – See our Cultivation section for more detailed advice.

All the seed sold by Arkham’s Botanical was freshly and ethically sourced
