Trichocereus macrogonus ‘Fields’ x Trichocereus peruvianus ‘Rosei #2′ | 25 seeds

Trichocereus macrogonus ‘Fields’ x Trichocereus peruvianus ‘Rosei #2′ is an excellent cactus hybrid! Both of the clones combined in this cool crossbreed originate from the venerable ‘Fields’ collection, located in Victoria, Australia. This is another of our EU exclusives!

Trichocereus macrogonus (syn. Echinopsis macrogona) is another fast-growing columnar Trichocereus cactus from Bolivia, which is not only closely related to Trichocereus bridgesii and Trichocereus pachanoi, but is particularly entwined with Trichocereus peruvianus (both macrogonus and peruvianus are currently ‘contending’ names, which many people consider to be synonymous).

A lovely blue-green in colour, macrogonus grows to around three metres high once mature. Its stems, growing up to approximately ten centimetres in diameter, are studded with brown to yellow brown spines up to five centimetres long. A self-sterile species, macrogonus blooms only at night, forming white flowers which can reach roughly eighteen centimetres across.

‘Rosei #2’ is a great example of the attractive Peruvian columnar cactus, Trichocereus peruvianus (‘Peruvian Torch’, syn. Echinopsis peruvianus) – sister to bridgesii and pachanoi. It’s often confused with the related Trichocereus cuzcoensis and is a wonderful blue-green coloured cactus. The name derives from an older term from the literature, generally referring to bluer-skinned forms of macrogonus and peruvianus.

Peruvianus has been used by humans for literally thousands of years, for example, as an ornamental, for religious practice and in traditional medicine (human and veterinary). Like many other columnar Trichocereus species, it can handle far lower temperatures than many other cacti and is consequently easy to grow indoors and outdoors in several climate zones.

As with most Trichocereus cactus species, these seeds are very easy to germinate and grow in USDA Hardiness Zones 8-11! Their main requirements consist of high humidity levels, free-draining (mildly acidic to mildly alkaline) soil and sufficient light, water and nutrients. Space plants roughly three metres apart to allow them enough room to reach maturity. Easily grown indoors in the UK and Europe!
