Trichocereus macrogonus ‘Parque de las Leyendas’ | 20 seeds
We’re rather excited to be able to offer extremely limited quantities of this great Trichocereus macrogonus seed, originating from a collection from Parque de las Leyendas in Lima, Peru. Perhaps not that unexpectedly, this is another of our UK exclusives!
Trichocereus macrogonus (syn. Echinopsis macrogona) is another fast-growing columnar Trichocereus cactus from Bolivia, which is not only closely related to the popular species Trichocereus bridgesii and Trichocereus pachanoi, but is particularly entwined with the ‘Peruvian Torch’, Trichocereus peruvianus (both macrogonus and peruvianus are currently ‘contending’ names, which many people consider to be synonymous).
A lovely blue-green in colour, macrogonus grows to around three metres high once mature. Its stems, growing up to approximately ten centimetres in diameter, are studded with brown to yellow brown spines up to five centimetres long. A self-sterile species, macrogonus blooms only at night, forming white flowers which can reach roughly eighteen centimetres across.
As with those of many of its relations, macrogonus seeds need exposure to light and a minimum temperature of 25°C to 30°C before they will germinate. Happy to grow indoors or outside within USDA Hardiness Zones 8-10, this hardy plant will easily average roughly thirty centimetres growth per year, presuming an ideal climate. Macrogonus is easily propagated from seed or cuttings – requiring fertile, free-draining soil and regular water – and is one of our favourite Trichocereus species!
