Trichocereus pachanoi ‘Huarochirí’ | ‘San Pedro’ | 25 seeds
Trichocereus pachanoi ‘Huarochirí’ is a nice, wild-harvested cactus variety from Peru’s Huarochirí province. Huarochirí’s capital is the city of Matucana, so the area is well-known for its Trichocereus (and other cactus) genetics! This is most certainly another of our wonderful UK exclusives too.
Trichocereus pachanoi (syn. Echinopsis pachanoi – informally known as ‘San Pedro’) is a fast-growing columnar cactus occurring naturally in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador and Peru (notably, in the Ecuadorian and Peruvian Andes, at 2,011-2,987 metres). An attractive, light to dark green cactus which reaches up to approximately six metres tall once mature (although the highest recorded was roughly twelve metres!) under suitable conditions in USDA Zones 8-10. Growing multiple branches from the plants base, its stems can be as thick as fifteen centimetres and usually have between six and eight ribs. Pachanoi can withstand far lower temperatures than can many other cacti, which makes it quite easy to grow indoors and outdoors in most areas.
As with some other Trichocereus species (such as the closely related Trichocereus bridgesii and Trichocereus peruvianus), this species has been used by South American shaman in healing rituals and is regarded by them as possessing sacred and protective properties. Besides this traditional use, it’s also regarded as a universal grafting stock, offering a high success rate and a long-lifetime of speedy and consistent growth.
These cactus seeds are fun and easy to germinate and grow! The main requirements are relatively high humidity, a free-draining soil mix and enough water, light and nutrients. They can be easily grown indoors in the UK and Europe.
