Trichocereus pachanoi (syn. Echinopsis pachanoi – commonly known as ‘San Pedro’), a fast-growing columnar cactus found naturally in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador and Peru. A native of the Ecuadorian and Peruvian Andes Mountains, where it prefers an altitude range of around 6,600 to 9,800 feet.
Pachanoi is a light to dark green cactus, growing up to twenty feet tall (although the highest recorded was forty feet!) under ideal conditions in USDA Zones 8-10. Its stems, usually forming multiple branches from the plants base, grow up to fifteen centimetres in diameter and generally possess six to eight ribs. Its origins in the Andes enable it to withstand far lower temperatures than can many other cacti and it’s consequently easy to grow indoors and outdoors in most areas.
‘SS02’ is a respected and much-coveted strain of Trichocereus bridgesii (syn. Echinopsis lageniformis, ‘Achuma’, ‘Bolivian Torch’), originating from America’s venerable Sacred Succulents. Another beautiful columnar Trichocereus, bridgesii can reach up to six metres tall, forming blue-green stems of up to twenty centimetres diameter which branch from the plant’s base. An extremely distinctive species, with formidable spines which can reach to ten centimetres in length.
Both bridgesii and pachanoi have been used by humans for several thousand years, as ornamental and hedge plants, in indigenous religious practice, as hardy grafting stock and in traditional human and veterinary medicine. As with most of the columnar Trichocereus, they can withstand much colder temperatures than many other cacti genera, so are easy to grow indoors and outdoors in USDA Zones 8-10.
Averaging around twelve inches of new growth per year in an ideal environment, this fantastic Trichocereus hybrid will reward you for many years to come, provided you can provide a little fertile, free-draining soil, regular watering and some love! These hybrid seeds are quite easy to germinate (check out the ‘Takeaway Tek’ in our Cultivation section) and can be easily grown indoors or out.
