An attractive columnar cactus originating from Peru, Trichocereus peruvianus (syn. Echinopsis peruviana, ‘Peruvian Torch’) is often confused with the related species Trichocereus cuzcoensis and Trichocereus macrogonus. Well-loved by the global cactus community for over a decade now, ‘Icaros DNA’ is an extremely reputable Peruvian supplier, who are especially respected for their high-quality Trichocereus peruvianus seeds. Icaros collect this seed ethically and renewably from Matacuna in Peru – a region long-considered to possess the “truest” (i.e non-cuzcoensis) peruvianus type. Consequently, ‘Icaros DNA’ produces some amazing cacti, forming glaucous dark blue-green coloured columns up to six metres tall, with strong dark-red to dark-brown spines that grow somewhat longer than those of the closely-related Trichocereus pachanoi (‘San Pedro’).
‘Wowie’ is a nice clone of the venerable Trichocereus bridgesii (syn. Echinopsis lageniformis), another fast-growing columnar type which reaches a maximum height of roughly six metres, branching out at the base to form stems of up to around twenty centimetres thick. Mature bridgesii can grow up to thirty centimetres a year in ideal conditions! Closely-related to Trichocereus pachanoi and Trichocereus peruvianus, bridgesii really is a beautiful plant – recognisable by its fierce spines that can reach up to ten centimetres in length!
As with some other Trichocereus species, bridgesii has been used by Bolivian shaman in healing rituals and is regarded by them as possessing sacred and protective properties. The species is also grown as an ornamental and as a universal grafting stock, offering a high success rate and a long-lifetime of speedy and consistent growth.
These hybrid seeds are very easy to germinate and grow and their main requirements consist of high humidity levels, a free-draining soil mix and enough water, light and nutrients. They can easily be grown indoors in the UK and Europe.
