Trichocereus peruvianus ‘Icaros DNA’ x Trichocereus ‘Colossus’ | 25 seeds
Here’s a bit of a mysterious crossing – Trichocereus peruvianus ‘Icaros DNA’ x Trichocereus ‘Colossus’. This is great quality seed that will produce some lovely plants and it’s also one of our many EU exclusives!
An attractive columnar cactus originating from Peru, Trichocereus peruvianus (syn. Echinopsis peruviana, ‘Peruvian Torch’) is often confused with the related species Trichocereus cuzcoensis and Trichocereus macrogonus. Well-loved by the global cactus community for over a decade now, ‘Icaros DNA’ is an extremely reputable Peruvian supplier, who are especially respected for their high-quality Trichocereus peruvianus seeds. Icaros collect this seed ethically and renewably from Matacuna in Peru – a region long-considered to possess the “truest” (i.e. non-cuzcoensis) peruvianus type. Consequently, ‘Icaros DNA’ produces some amazing cacti, forming glaucous dark blue-green coloured columns up to six metres tall, with strong dark-red to dark-brown spines that grow somewhat longer than those of the closely-related Trichocereus pachanoi (‘San Pedro’).
Now considered to be an invalid name (it was formerly proposed as Trichocereus colossus), Trichocereus ‘Colossus’ is a large cactus of uncertain heritage! All we could find out about this form so far is that it (usually) grows strongly-indented ribs once mature and could be a cross between Trichocereus macrogonus and Trichocereus puquiensis, or perhaps some kind of hybrid involving a pachanoi somewhere along the line.
As with most Trichocereus cacti, these cool seeds are easy to germinate and grow in USDA Hardiness Zones 8-11. Their main requirements consist of high humidity levels, free-draining (mildly acidic to mildly alkaline) soil and sufficient light, water and nutrients. Space plants roughly three metres apart to allow them enough room to reach maturity. Easily grown indoors in the UK and Europe!
