Trichocereus peruvianus ‘Matacuna’ | ‘Peruvian Torch’ | Rooted plant
Trichocereus peruvianus ‘Matacuna’ is a nice example of this great Peruvian columnar cactus (syn. Echinopsis peruviana). Commonly known as the ‘Peruvian Torch’, this species is often confused with/ considered to be on a continuum with the closely related Trichocereus cuzcoensis and Trichocereus macrogonus. The plants offered here are between six and ten centimetres tall.
The seeds from which these plants were grown were originally collected in Matacuna in Peru – a region long-considered to possess the “truest” (i.e. non-cuzcoensis) peruvianus type. Eventually, these plants will become a darker blue-green in colour and will reach up to six metres high, producing slightly longer, red to brown spines than most Trichocereus pachanoi (‘San Pedro’) varieties.
As with most of the Trichocereus cacti, these young plants are quite easy to take care of, either indoors or outdoors in USDA Hardiness Zones 8-11. Their main requirements at this stage are a mildly acidic to mildly alkaline, free-draining soil and sufficient light, water and nutrients. If planting them in the ground, space these plants a few metres apart so that they enough room to grow nice and big!
