Trichocereus santiaguensis (syn. Echinopsis spachiana) | ‘Golden Torch’, ‘Torch’, ‘White Torch’ | 10 seeds
Trichocereus santiaguensis (syn. Echinopsis santiaguensis, Trichocereus spachiana, etc.) is a bright green columnar cactus species with that classic western movie desert look, hailing from Argentina. Commonly known in South America as the ‘Golden Torch’, ‘Torch’, or ‘White Torch’ cactus, the species grows to a mature height of around three metres and produces spiny columns approximately twelve centimetres in diameter. The ‘Golden Torch’ is further identifiable by its amazing white flowers, which bloom at night and average around twenty centimetres in diameter.
As with most other members of the Trichocereus genus – for example, the much more widely-grown Trichocereus pachanoi (‘San Pedro’) and Trichocereus bridgesii (‘Bolivian Torch’) – santiaguensis is very easy to grow from seed. It grows well indoors or outdoors in USDA Hardiness Zones 9, 10 and 11, provided it receives full sun with good draining soil and does not suffer temperatures below freezing for any extended periods of time. A nice addition to any serious Trichocereus collection!
