Trichocereus scopulicola (syn. Echinopsis scopulicola, Trichocereus scopulicolus) occurs rarely in the wild, but may sometimes be found growing in Bolivia’s Department Tarija, at an elevation of roughly one to one and a half thousand metres. Unlike many other columnar Trichocereus species, it possesses unusually short spines, which means it’s that much more pleasant when handling them is required! Growing to three or four metres tall and a maximum of around ten centimetres diameter, this night-flowering species is presumed to be a particularly close relative to Trichocereus bridgesii (with which it readily forms hybrids).
‘Tig’ is a highly-rated named clone of Trichocereus bridgesii (syn. Echinopsis lageniformis), another fast-growing columnar type which grows up to around six metres tall, branching out at the base to form stems of up to around twenty centimetres thick. Mature bridgesii can grow up to thirty centimetres a year in ideal conditions! Closely-related to the well-known Trichocereus pachanoi (“San Pedro”) and Trichocereus peruvianus (“Peruvian Torch”), bridgesii really is a beautiful plant – highly recognisable by its fierce spines that can reach up to ten centimetres in length! As with some other Trichocereus species, it has been used by Bolivian shaman in healing rituals and is regarded by them as possessing sacred and protective properties.
Besides their traditional use, most columnar Trichocereus are regarded as a universal grafting stock, offering a high success rate and a long-lifetime of speedy and consistent growth. They’re also often used in South America as a hedge plant and as spiky natural fencing against human or animal intrusion!
These seeds are very easy to germinate and grow and their main requirements consisting of high humidity levels, a free-draining soil mix and enough water, light and nutrients. Easily grown indoors in the UK.
