Found rarely in nature, Trichocereus scopulicola (syn. Echinopsis scopulicola, Trichocereus scopulicolus) grows in Bolivia’s Department Tarija, at roughly one to one and a half thousand metres elevation.

Reaching three or four metres tall and roughly ten centimetres in diameter, this night-flowering cactus is presumed to be a particularly close relative to Trichocereus bridgesii, with which it readily forms hybrids. Unlike many other Trichocereus species, the scopulicola has unusually short spines, which means it’s that much more pleasant when handling them is required!

Commonly known as ‘San Pedro’, Trichocereus pachanoi (syn. Echinopsis pachanoi) is a fast-growing columnar cactus found naturally in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador and Peru. Native to the Ecuadorian and Peruvian Andes Mountains, where it prefers an altitude range of around 6,600 to 9,800 feet, pachanoi has been used for more than 3,000 years by humans, variously as an ornamental, for religious divination and in traditional medicine (human and animal).

Trichocereus pachanoi is a light to dark green cactus, growing up to twenty feet tall (although the highest recorded was forty feet!) under ideal conditions in USDA Zones 8b-10. Its stems, usually forming multiple branches from the plants base, grow up to fifteen centimetres in diameter and generally possess six to eight ribs. Pachanoi’s origins in the Andes enable it to withstand far lower temperatures than can many other cacti and it’s consequently easy to grow indoors and outdoors in most areas.

Averaging about twelve inches of new growth per year (once mature), this cool Trichocereus hybrid can be propagated from seed or cuttings, requiring only fertile, free-draining soil, regular watering and the occasional dose of organic fertiliser.
