(Trichocereus bridgesii ‘SS02’ x Trichocereus peruvianus ‘SS01’) x Trichocereus pachanoi ‘Yowie’ | 25 seeds
We’re pleased to say that we’ve a very small amount of this amazing three-way cross cactus seed – (Trichocereus bridgesii ‘SS02’ x Trichocereus peruvianus ‘SS01’) x Trichocereus pachanoi ‘Yowie’! This one’s yet another of our UK exclusives too…
‘SS02’ is a much-coveted strain of Trichocereus bridgesii (syn. Echinopsis lageniformis, ‘Achuma’, ‘Bolivian Torch’), originating from America’s venerable Sacred Succulents. A beautiful columnar Trichocereus, bridgesii can reach up to six metres tall, forming blue-green stems of up to twenty centimetres diameter which branch from the plant’s base. An extremely distinctive species, with formidable spines which can reach to ten centimetres in length. Closely-related to Trichocereus pachanoi and Trichocereus peruvianus (‘Peruvian Torch’), bridgesii really is a beautiful plant – highly recognisable by its fierce spines that can reach up to ten centimetres in length!
‘SS01’ is another impressive selection originating from Sacred Succulents, and is a great example of Trichocereus peruvianus! Native to the Peruvian Andes, where it grows at an altitude of between two thousand and three thousand metres, peruvianus is a short to medium-spined, blue-green and fast-growing columnar cactus which reaches roughly six metres high, producing fantastic, white-to-whitish flowers. The species forms a complex intergrade with closely-related species including Trichocereus cuzcoensis and Trichocereus macrogonus, loosely comprising an array of great varieties and hybrids.
‘Yowie’ is a brilliant named clone of Trichocereus pachanoi (syn. Echinopsis pachanoi – commonly known as ‘San Pedro’), a fast-growing columnar cactus found naturally in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador and Peru. A native of the Ecuadorian and Peruvian Andes Mountains, where it prefers an altitude range of around 6,600 to 9,800 feet, pachanoi has been used for by humans for more than three thousand years, variously as an ornamental, for religious divination and in traditional medicine (human and animal).
Pachanoi is a light to dark green cactus, growing up to twenty feet tall (although the highest recorded was forty feet!) under ideal conditions in USDA Zones 8b-10. Its stems, usually forming multiple branches from the plants base, grow up to fifteen centimetres in diameter and generally possess six to eight ribs. Its origins in the Andes enable it to withstand far lower temperatures than can many other cacti and it’s consequently easy to grow indoors and outdoors in most areas.
These hybrid seeds are very easy to germinate and grow and their main requirements consist of high humidity levels, a free-draining soil mix and enough water, light and nutrients. They can easily be grown indoors in the UK and Europe.
