Trichocereus ‘Super Pedro’ x Trichocereus peruvianus ‘Anakie’ | 25 seeds
Trichocereus ‘Super Pedro’ x Trichocereus peruvianus ‘Anakie’ is another desirable Australian hybrid, exclusive to Arkham’s Botanical – grab some amazing genetics while you can!
‘Super Pedro’ is a coveted ‘named clone’ from Australia, variously suggested to be a hybrid of species including (controversially) Trichocereus cordobensis, Trichocereus pachanoi and Trichocereus scopulicola. Whatever its parentage, ‘Super Pedro’ is much-coveted for its fast and thick growth, as well as for its distinctive, sometimes glaucous, appearance. Also known by growers as ‘Lance’, ‘Shaman Bob’ and ‘Spiny scopulicola’, the earliest source of this clone we can find seems to be the legendary Cactus Country farm in Victoria, Australia.
‘Anakie’ is a great example of the attractive Peruvian columnar cactus, peruvianus (‘Peruvian Torch’, syn. Echinopsis peruvianus) – sister to the famous ‘San Pedro’, or Trichocereus pachanoi, and ‘Bolivian Torch’, or Trichocereus bridgesii. It’s often confused with the related Trichocereus cuzcoensis and is a wonderful blue-green coloured cactus.
Peruvianus has been used by humans for literally thousands of years, for example, as an ornamental, for religious practice and in traditional medicine (human and veterinary). Like many other columnar Trichocereus species, it can handle far lower temperatures than many other cacti and is consequently easy to grow indoors and outdoors in several climate zones.
Most Trichocereus species can be easily grown indoors in the UK and these seeds are good and viable! Easy to germinate and grow, their main needs consist of relatively high humidity levels, a free-draining soil mix and enough water, light and nutrients. Besides traditional indigenous ritual use, several columnar Trichocereus species are regarded as universal grafting stock, offering high success rates and long lifespans of fast, consistent growth. They’re also popular when used as a hedge plant and as spiky natural fencing against human or animal intruders!
