Trichocereus ‘Super Pedro’ x Trichocereus scopulicola | 25 seeds
Yet another amazing crossbreed (and yet another of our EU exclusives), Trichocereus ‘Super Pedro’ x Trichocereus scopulicola really is a solid cactus hybrid, all the way from Australia! Why not add some to your collection now?
The father of this hybrid, ‘Super Pedro’ (also known as ‘Lance’, ‘Shaman Bob’ and ‘Spiny Scopulicola’), is a much discussed strain from Australia, the heritage of which is conjectured to have involved a mixture of species, including (controversially) Trichocereus cordobensis, Trichocereus pachanoi (‘San Pedro’) and Trichocereus scopulicola. Whatever the parents, it’s a rather distinctive, sometimes glaucous cactus, renowned for its fast, thick growth. The earliest source of this clone we can find a written reference to seems to be the famous Cactus Country farm, in Victoria, Australia.
The mother plant, Trichocereus scopulicola (syn. Echinopsis scopulicola, Trichocereus scopulicolus), is only found occasionally in the wild, generally in Bolivia’s Department Tarija, growing at an approximate altitude of between one and one and a half thousand metres. Unlike many other Trichocereus, scopulicola has particularly short spination, making it much more pleasant to handle than many of its relatives! Growing to three or four metres tall and a maximum of around ten centimetres diameter, this night-flowering species is presumed to be a particularly close relative to Trichocereus bridgesii (with which it readily crosses).
Most Trichocereus species can be easily grown indoors in the UK and these seeds are good and viable! Easy to germinate and grow, their main needs consist of relatively high humidity levels, a free-draining soil mix and enough water, light and nutrients. Besides traditional indigenous ritual use, several columnar Trichocereus species are regarded as universal grafting stock, offering high success rates and long lifespans of fast, consistent growth. They’re also popular when used as a hedge plant and as spiky natural fencing against human or animal intruders!
