Trichocereus terscheckii ‘Validus AGS’ | ‘Argentine Saguaro’, ‘Cardón Grande’ | Seeds
We’re proud to be stocking a limited amount of this excellent ‘Validus AGS’ Trichocereus terscheckii cactus variety (JLcoll.4380) seed, collected by noted French naturalist and author Joël Lodé! Just another of our UK exclusives…
Trichocereus terscheckii (syn. Echinopsis terscheckii) is a large columnar cactus native to areas of Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru. Growing well in USDA Hardiness Zones 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13, this hardy species is commonly known as the ‘Cardón Grande’ or ‘Argentine Saguaro’. It’s also known (less often) as the ‘Cardón’, ‘Cardón Santos’, ‘Golden Saguaro’, ‘San Pedro’ and ‘South American Saguaro’.
Similarly to other closely-related Trichocereus – such as Trichocereus pachanoi (‘San Pedro’) and Trichocereus peruvianus (‘Peruvian Torch’) – terscheckii ‘Validus AGS’ is easy to grow from seed, producing branching columns up to roughly ten metres high and fifty centimetres in diameter. As with the more celebrated Trichocereus species, terscheckii has a long history of use in traditional healing medicine, being considered as a sacred plant by many indigenous peoples. Besides these medicinal traditions, Trichocereus terscheckii is useful as a universal grafting stock which offers a high success rate and long lifespan of speedy and steady growth. Further, the species is also grown as a hedge or fence plant – a function for which it is eminently suitable!
These seeds are so simple to to germinate – you just need relatively high humidity levels, free-draining soil and adequate light, water and nutrients.
