Trichocereus werdermannianus | Rooted plant

We’re exceptionally happy to be offering these lovely Trichocereus werdermannianus (syn. Echinopsis werdermanniana) rooted cacti – especially as it’s given us the excuse to add this rarer Trichocereus species to our personal collection! Not so commonly available on the European market, these gorgeous cacti are approximately four centimetres across by five centimetres high and were organically grown from seed in the UK.

Trichocereus werdermannianus is a lesser known but worthwhile cactus species, often confused with/considered as a subspecies of the very similar Argentine species Trichocereus terscheckii (the ‘Argentine Saguaro’ or ‘Cardón Grande’) and considered by some as synonymous with Trichocereus taquimbalensis var. wilkeae (which would also make it a particularly close relative of Trichocereus Taquimbalensis and Trichocereus Tacaquirensis). It’s also closely related to the rather rarer Trichocereus validus and (a little less so) to better known relatives such as Trichocereus pachanoi (‘San Pedro’) and Trichocereus peruvianus (‘Peruvian Torch’).

Native to Bolivia’s Tupiza region (where it grows at an altitude of between 2,600 and 3,000 metres), Trichocereus werdermannianus is a slow-growing and erect columnar cactus, forming dark green to blue grey to grey green stems up to approximately five metres tall by sixty centimetres or so in diameter. Given adequate space and the right conditions, the species will eventually mature into a large cactus ‘tree’. Bone to yellow to yellow-brown coloured spines sprout five to fifteen centimetres from the cactus stem’s surface, while white to whitish flowers (quite variable but usually approximately twenty two centimetres long) grow from the upper regions of the plant.

Found growing naturally in USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11, werdermannianus is quite easy to grow from seeds or cuttings. Plant in full sun in a well-drained soil mix and water only once this is completely dry.  The species is rather frost resistant but should not be exposed to temperatures lower than around -5° C.
