Allium cepa ‘North Holland Blood Red’, ‘Redmate’ | ‘Spring Onion’ | 100 seeds
The tasty ‘Redmate’ variety of spring onion is also known as ‘North Holland Blood Red’, for it’s intense crimson skin. Hardy, easy to grow and very high performing, ‘Redmate’ is very versatile, working well as a salad onion or being left to form larger bulbs akin to a normal Allium onion species in size.
Growing roughly thirty centimetres tall and twenty centimetres across, ‘Redmate’ produces sweet-tasting and crisp Spring Onions with distinctive red bulbs. Happy in relatively shallow soil in sun or partial shade, the variety may be grown in the ground or in trays, providing they are kept moist but well-drained.
Sow thinly in pre-watered neutral soil, one to two centimetres deep and about five centimetres apart – leave about thirty centimetres between each row to allow them room to grow. The bulbs are mild-tasting and tender when young, becoming larger and stronger-tasting if left to swell – especially when overwintered. Harvest around the eight-week point for a standard spring onion or wait until twelve to fourteen weeks for a fully grown onion. We suggest planting in monthly batches to assure an ongoing supply!
