Allium cepa ‘White Lisbon’ | ‘Spring Onion’ | 100 seeds
It’s easy to see why the ‘White Lisbon’ variety of Allium cepa (the common Spring Onion) was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit. An extremely fast-growing variety, ‘White Lisbon’ has smooth white skin and a pleasantly mild flavour.
Growing roughly thirty centimetres tall and five centimetres across, ‘White Lisbon’ is partial to relatively shallow soil in sun or partial shade and can be grown in the ground or in trays – provided it’s kept moist yet well-drained. Developed for spring, summer and autumn cropping, it’s easy to cultivate, so free Spring Onions all around!
Sow thinly in pre-watered soil, one to two centimetres deep and a centimetre or so apart – leave about thirty centimetres between each row to allow them room to grow. The bulbs are mature within about ten weeks from sowing and are mild-tasting and tender when young, becoming larger and stronger-tasting if left to swell – especially when overwintered. Why not plant monthly batches to assure an ongoing supply?!
