Capsicum chinense var. ‘Carolina Reaper’ | ‘Red Chili Pepper’ | 10 seeds
From 2013-2017 holding the Guinness World Record for the hottest chili pepper in the world, the Carolina Reaper is certainly not for the faint-hearted (or, it could be argued, the terminally sensible)…
An intensely hot cultivar of the Capsicum chinense pepper, the variety was originally bred in South Carolina, USA, by crossing a Bhut jolokia with a red habanero – resulting in a gnarled red pepper with an official average heat rating of 1,569,300 Scoville Heat Units (although the highest rating for an individual pepper of the type is a staggering 2,200,000)!
Christened the ‘Reaper’ due to the pointy shape of its tail, this pepper is fairly easy to grow in the home garden, provided minimum temperatures of 18°C–20°C (64°F–68°F) are maintained. To restrict the plants growth and therefore cause it to fruit faster, 30–40cm pots are ideal.
