Crassula perforata ‘JL’ | ‘String of Buttons’ | 25 seeds
Crassula perforata ‘JL’ (syn. Crassula conjuncta, Crassula nealeana, Crassula perfossa) is a cool South African succulent of the Crassulaceae family, commonly known as the ‘Baby’s Necklace’, ‘Necklace Vine’, ‘Pagoda Plant’ and ‘String of Buttons’. There are currently several popular recognised subspecies and varieties of this plant – for example, Crassula perforata subsp. kougaensis and Crassula perforata ‘Variegata’.
Naturally occurring on rocky slopes and in vegetative thickets, perforata is a small (up to roughly forty-five centimetres high) succulent which starts off as fleshy and erect but later turns woodier and more prostrate. Fairly broad, green-grey leaves (often edged with a whitish-pinkish colour) sprout from the plant’s stem, semi-triangular and reaching two centimetres long by roughly fifteen millimetres across. Tiny star-shaped flowers bloom between mid-spring and summer, coloured white-whitish to pale pink.
This is a fairly easy species to grow from seed (or cuttings), either indoors or outside (in USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11). Start in a mildly alkaline to mildly acidic soil mix (we generally use something along the lines of 33% potting soil:33% perlite:33% sand), spacing approximately thirty centimetres apart in full sun to partial shade. Try not to over-water and watch out for mealy bugs and fungal nasties and you should be rewarded with some truly magnificent plants!
