‘Chantenay Red Core’ has indisputably been the standard Chantenay-type carrot since its horticultural introduction in 1929. Prized as a large and very sweet cultivar of Daucus carota, the common carrot of the Apiaceae known variously as the ‘Bird’s Nest’, ‘Bishop’s Lace’, ’Carrot’, ‘Queen Anne’s Lace’ and ‘Wild Carrot’.

Native to temperate regions of Europe and southwest Asia – as well as being long-naturalised to Australia and the USA – domesticated carrots are hardy subspecies cultivars growing thirty to sixty centimetres tall in full sun to partial shade.
