Papaver somniferum ‘Crone’, ‘Elka’ | ‘Opium Poppy’ | ~100 seeds
‘Crone’ (also known as ‘Elka’) is a rarely-encountered, yet desirable, cultivar of Papaver somniferum var. glabrum – the ‘White-seeded Bread Poppy’, or ‘White Opium Poppy’. Growing to around one-and-a-half metres tall, this Poppy variety forms incredibly attractive white to pink-purple flowers, plus lots of healthy and tasty seed too!
As with most other members of the family Papaveraceae, ‘Crone’ is extremely easy to cultivate from seed in USDA Hardiness Zones 7-11. Provide an acid, alkaline or neutral, well-drained chalk, clay, loam or sand, in full sun to partial shade – add adequate water and you’re golden!
‘Opium Poppy’ seed generally takes between five and twenty days to germinate. When they do, wait for the seedlings to reach roughly seven to ten centimetres tall before thinning them out, aiming to leave thirty centimetres or so between each plant to enable them ample space to grow.
A great, food-producing and low-maintenance component of any flower garden. combine it with some of our other Papaver varieties to brighten up your plot!
