Papaver somniferum var. glabrum ‘Sokol’ | ‘Opium Poppy’ | 100 seeds
‘Sokol’ is a gorgeous annual ‘Opium Poppy’ variety more properly known as Papaver somniferum var. glabrum, the ‘White Seeded Bread-seed Poppy’. Like all true poppies, it’s a member of the Papaveraceae family.
Easily grown from seed in well-drained clay, chalk, loam or sand, ‘Sokol’ is a rarer type of ‘Opium Poppy’ which reaches roughly a metre and a half in height and produces wonderful white-pink-purple flowers – and an inordinate amount of tasty seed!
There aren’t many species easier to grow than poppies; provide a position in full sun to partial shade in USDA Hardiness Zones 7-11, add water and you’re golden! Somniferum seed usually takes anything from five to twenty days to germinate. Wait for the sprouts to grow to around seven to ten centimetres and then thin them out, leaving thirty centimetres between each plant, allowing the individual plants enough room to grow to maturity.
A great, low-maintenance, addition to any garden – mix and match with a few other Papaver varieties for a riot of colour every year!
