Silene capensis (syn. Silene undulata) is a member of the family Caryophyllaceae and is native to South Africa’s Eastern Cape. It’s regarded as a sacred plant by Africa’s Xhosa tribe and is used as part of their shamanic initiation ceremonies.
Growing easily in USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11, capensis is a night-flowering annual herbaceous species which produces fragrant white flowers from late Spring to Summer and grows to approximately sixty centimetres tall.
It is easily cultivated from seed and is tolerant of a wide temperature range (-5°C to 40°C). Plants should be spaced approximately twenty centimetres apart to allow ample room for them to grow. Ideal growing conditions for this species are sun to partial shade in a regularly-watered bed.
