Valeriana officinalis | ‘Common Valerian’, ‘Valerian’ | 100 seeds
‘Valerian’ is the common name for Valeriana officinalis, a perennial flowering plant of the caprifoliaceae family which is native to Europe and Asia.
The mature Valerian plant bears sweet pink or white flowers – especially unusual as they have neither bilateral nor radial symmetry – and can grow to around 1.5 metres in height.
Containing a rich blend of chemicals including acids, alkaloids, flavanones, iridoids and sesquiterpenes, Valerian has consequently been used medicinally since at least the time of ancient Greece and Rome. Variously recommended as an anticonvulsant, antiseptic, migraine treatment, pain reliever and sedative, Valeriana officinalis is a rewarding and easy species to grow from seed.
